The Tegernsee Valley – one of Bavaria’s most important and oldest cultural landscapes

The Location

About

Schloss Ringberg is located around 1000 metres above the Tegernsee, some 50 kilometres from the Bavarian capital city of Munich.

The Tegernsee is one of the lakes on the northern rim of the Alps. Picturesque villages like Gmund, Bad Wiessee, Tegernsee and Rottach-Egern are dotted along its shores. One of Bavaria’s oldest cultural landscapes, the Tegernsee Valley has long been a popular tourist destination. In the 1960s, one of the world’s first ring-form sewerage systems encircling a lake was constructed here, making the Tegernsee one of the cleanest lakes in Bavaria.

Spa guests and summer tourists began visiting the valley in the municipality of Kreuth, which belonged to the first king of Bavaria, as early as the beginning of the 19th century. The royal estate of Kaltenbrunn, at the northern end of the Tegernsee, also became a popular destination for excursions and proved a source of fascination for many painters.

The name »Tegernsee« comes from »Tegarinseo« which appeared in documents from 796. Until secularisation in the early 19th century, the lake belonged to the Monastery bearing the same name. Bild: Openstreetmap.org, Lizenz: CC-BY-SA 2.0

The name »Ringsee« is derived from the German »gering«, meaning small, which distinguished it from the »large« Tegernsee. The bay, which is around 300 times 600 m² (14.2 hectares), is located directly in the mouth of the River Weißach. Bild: Bernd Reuschenberg, Lizenz: CC–BY–SA 3.0
